Web of Deception

New Book Addresses Intentional Misinformation on the Internet

July 31, 2002, Medford, NJ — Information Today, Inc. announces the publication of Web of Deception: Misinformation on the Internet, edited by Anne P. Mintz with a foreword by Steve Forbes.

The book looks at the many ways in which intentionally misleading or erroneous information on the Web can wreak havoc on the health, privacy, investments, purchases, business decisions, and legal affairs of online users. Editor Mintz—Director of Knowledge Management at Forbes Inc.—brought together 10 information experts in order to illuminate the issues and help readers recognize and deal with a flood of deception and misinformation in numerous fields and subject areas.

Contributors and chapters include:

  • Anne P. Mintz – “Introduction: Lies, Damned Lies, and the Internet”
  • Paul S. Piper—“Web Hoaxes, Counterfeit Scams, and Other Spurious Information on the Internet”
  • Susan M. Detwiler—“Charlatans, Leeches, and Old Wives: Medical Misinformation”
  • Helene Kassler—“It’s a Dangerous World Out There: Misinformation in the Corporate Universe”
  • Stephen E. Arnold—“Internet Users at Risk: The Identity/Privacy Target Zone”
  • Carol Ebbinghouse—“Charity Scams on the Web,” “Legal Advice on the Internet,” and “Remedies for Intentional Misinformation”
  • Lysbeth B. Chuck—“Welcome to the Dark Side: E-Commerce, Online Consumer, and E-Mail Fraud”

  • Susan Feldman—“This Is What I Asked For? The Searching Quagmire”
  • Elizabeth D. Liddy—“How a Search Engine Works”
  • Anne P. Mintz and Barbara Quint—“Endnote: What a Tangled Web We Weave”
Ari L. Goldman, Professor at Columbia University School of Journalism, said, “Over the last few years, we’ve all fallen in love with the Web. But romance has its limits—and its dangers. Anne Mintz and her team have written a compelling cautionary tale that commands our attention.”

Anne P. Mintz is Director of Knowledge Management at Forbes Inc., where she negotiates license agreements with online services, supervises online and Internet training, and oversees the corporate information center. She is an award-winning writer on information topics and a popular speaker at information industry events.
