Information Management for the Intelligent Organization:
The Art of Scanning the Environment, Third Edition

Third edition features new sections and numerous extended case studies

January 2, 2002, Medford, NJ — Information Today, Inc. has announced the publication of Information Management for the Intelligent Organization: The Art of Scanning the Environment, Third Edition, by Chun Wei Choo. This new monograph, published by ITI on behalf of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST), is updated and expanded to develop an understanding of how an organization may manage its information processes more effectively in order to achieve these goals.

The intelligent organization is one that is skilled at marshaling its information resources and capabilities, transforming information into knowledge, and using this knowledge to sustain and enhance its performance in a restless environment. This third edition features new sections on information culture, information overload, and organizational learning; a new chapter on knowledge management (KM) and the role of information professionals; and numerous extended case studies of environmental scanning by organizations in Asia, Europe, and North America.

Chun Wei Choo, Ph.D., is associate professor at the Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto, where he teaches courses in information management, online information retrieval, organizational decision making, and knowledge management. Dr. Choo is the author of numerous books and articles on information and knowledge management.

Here is what reviewers said about the previous edition:

“Choo has presented his case with numerous references to studies, information sources, and applications. [He] leaves no doubt to the careful reader about the usefulness of this book to business information managers, information scientists, and librarians…of value to anyone gathering, synthesizing, and using information from sources outside the organization.”
—JASIS
“Timely and relevant…Choo integrates the results of many researchers studying the way managers make decisions and provides insights into the myriad sources and quality of information necessary for informed decision making. Terms are clearly explained…the strong bibliography makes this work very useful for academics.”
—CHOICE
“[The book] revitalizes the overworked concept of ‘information management’ by placing it in the context of organizational development. Choo offers a framework for information management that incorporates strategies for systematic environmental scanning and for systematic knowledge creation, management, and use…the book is timely, thoughtful, interesting, and concise in its treatment of the subject.”
