Online and CD-ROM databases can offer instant gratification for the most complex information needs if they deliver what they promise in the ads and publicity blurbs. The promises about the depth and width of coverage, the time-span, the currency and the updating frequency of
databases, the completeness of records, the indexing and abstracting quality, should not always be taken at face value. The workshop will illustrate the most serious database deficiencies, their implications, and discuss what the customers should really know to prepare for defensive searching.
