EDITOR'S NOTE
The End of an Era
by Brandi Scardilli
Did you ever subscribe to Netflix’s DVD service? I did until 2019. I was sad to cancel it—it was so user-friendly and convenient, and it was my last tie to the VHS- and DVD-based video store culture of my youth. But after the launch of Apple TV+ and Disney+ that year, I was paying for enough streaming services to pretty much find everything I wanted to watch (and clicking on those apps was even more user-friendly and convenient than mailing DVD envelopes back and forth). Starting on page 17, Amy Affelt writes about the pang of loss many movie lovers felt when Netflix announced it is shutting down its DVD business on Sept. 30. Affelt provides sources for discovering international, independent, and esoteric films that the commercial streaming services and a typical library collection might not have. I also suggest looking into Biblio+, a library streaming service Information Today covered in our June 2022 issue.
This issue, you can find our perspectives on ChatGPT in Legal Issues (page 26) and Database Review (page 30). And if you’re curious about the new social network Threads, Linda Pophal talks to business leaders about how they are integrating it into their marketing strategies (page 39).
