OverDrive, Inc. has announced that its partner WHSmith Online, a division
of U.K.-based book and magazine retailer WHSmith, has launched an eBookstore
that is the first online bookseller to offer e-books in the Palm Reader
format. More than 4,000 Palm e-book titles from leading U.K. and U.S. publishers,
including HarperCollins, Random House, Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill,
St. Martin's Press, and Time Warner, are available for immediate purchase
and downloading from the WHSmith eBookstore (http://ebooks.whsmith.co.uk).
The WHSmith eBookstore is powered by OverDrive. Steve Potash, OverDrive
CEO, said: "WHSmith has a long history as one of the premier booksellers
in the world, and we're honored to be partnered with them. Our solutions
make it easy for PDA, wireless, and mobile customers to instantly purchase
and download the most popular new releases for immediate enjoyment on their
hand-held devices."
Palm Reader, which is available for downloading at no charge from the
WHSmith eBookstore, runs on Palm Powered handhelds using Palm OS 3.0 and
higher and on Pocket PC handhelds. Most Palm Reader e-books take less than
2 minutes to download and require only a few hundred kilobytes of available
memory on the reader's hand-held computer.
WHSmith has over 1,500 stores worldwide that employ more than 32,000
people in 13 countries. It is reportedly the number-one book and magazine
seller in the U.K. WHSmith Online is the interactive arm of WHSmith and
offers 2.1 million products on its Web site.
