Did you know that October is National Book Month? I had no idea. (I guess I was too busy consuming every pumpkin spice-flavored product available to pay attention. Oops!) It’s a time set aside to celebrate reading culture. In our lead feature (page 1), Nancy Herther has the details on reading habits, including info on sales channels such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble and stats about ebooks, audiobooks, and other formats. Also on page 1, Anthony Aycock shares four books that are crucial to understanding school shooters. They’re not what you’d call pleasure reading (although true-crime accounts are fascinating), but they’re important for understanding our world.
Social media is another fact of life in 2018. Kenneth Evans explores the necessity of a Facebook account in We the People (page 6), Justin Hoenke talks to a librarian who’s big on Twitter in A Day in the Life (page 7), Sophia Guevara shares tips for live tweeting in The Help Desk (page 9), and George Pike studies who owns your Twitter feed in Legal Issues (page 17).
Since we have to be able to organize all of the information coming our way, data analytics is key. Terry Ballard talks to the CEO of Data-Planet about how the company has expanded its repository (page 1), and Gwen Gregory examines Using Digital Analytics for Smart Assessmentin Book Review (page 20).
