Gale Group, a business unit of the Thomson Learning division of Thomson
Corp., has acquired the European Research and Development Database (ERDD)
from Elsevier Science. ERDD comprises the Directory of European Research
and Development, a database of 10,000 European research centers, and Who's
Who in European Research and Development, a biographical directory of approximately
13,000 researchers and scientists.
The respected science database will become part of K.G. Saur, a Munich-based
operating unit of Gale Group acquired late last year.
"There's a good match between ERDD and Gale's K.G. Saur's core international
library markets," said Chris Morton, Gale's executive vice president of
development. "This is a respected brand name that makes a solid addition
to our family of products."
Morton said that K.G. Saur expects editorial synergies with such products
as German Men and Women in Science. "We look at the electronic opportunities
inherent in the content in ERDD as well," he said. "For example, ERDD's
scientific and biographical content will broaden the international content
in Gale's Resource Centers."
