There’s a holiday-themed movie I watch every year: 1995’s While You Were Sleeping, starring a charming Sandra Bullock, an adorable Bill Pullman, and a peacefully comatose Peter Gallagher (the titular You). It’s your standard rom-com, with misunderstandings, hijinks, and a really cute slipping-on-an-icy-sidewalk scene. Bullock’s manipulations don’t hold up all that well in 2018 (and there’s a questionable bit with a neighbor who invades Bullock’s privacy to a gross degree), but there’s a lot to love about it. I’m all about celebrating the things that make us happy. We’re leaving behind a grim, exhausting year, but there are always ways to keep yourself hopeful as we head into 2019. (And there’s this: Pullman and Gallagher’s grandmother in While You Were Sleeping is played by Glynis Johns, aka Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins, the sequel to which is out Dec. 25. Happy holidays, indeed.)
This issue, we’ve got Corilee Christou’s “ALA Ventures Out Into Communities for New Advocacy Effort” (page 1), which explores ALA’s initiative to visit libraries across the U.S., led by current president Loida Garcia-Febo. Garcia-Febo also contributed to the article on what library professionals are excited about these days (“Library Positivity,” page 1). Kelly Doyle writes about her experience as a Wikipedian in Residence, when she took real steps toward gender equality (page 1), and Gwen Gregory covers the good Wikipedia can do for libraries in Book Review (page 18). We’ve got two LiteBytes this month (page 30), with David King geeking out over LeBron James and Thomas Pack sharing his favorite website for amusing products.
