EDITOR'S NOTE
Travel Light
by Brandi Scardilli
Henry Miller said of traveling, “One’s destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things.” Or, put another way by Eurythmics, “I travel the world and the seven seas / Everybody’s looking for something.” At this year’s Public Library Association (PLA) Conference, one librarian shared how a wealthy donor sponsored her trip to Europe. If you were given thousands of dollars to travel the world, where would you go?
Since that’s a purely hypothetical question (for now, anyway), let’s focus on how we can learn about others’ experiences and cultures without leaving our homes. Justin Hoenke interviews the manager of a New Zealand library on page 9. Turn to page 10 to learn more about that librarian from PLA. On page 14, Mick O’Leary explores global trust levels in various institutions using the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer. And John Charlton has the latest information news from Europe on page 18.
This month’s features focus on various aspects of being an info pro—education, research, and doing library work. Koraljka Golub walks us through the process of creating an iSchool at Linnaeus University in Sweden. Nancy Herther explores the ongoing problems with using Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) for accessing judicial information. And I talk to Recorded Books about its new app and unlimited streaming video pricing model. The articles begin on page 1. On page 28, Terry Ballard details a new patron-relationship management system called Patron Point.
