Game On
by Brandi Scardilli
Have you ever wanted to know more about video games and how to incorporate them into your library? Anthony Aycock, Justin Hoenke, and Chi Nwogu have got you covered. In “Everything Librarians Always Wanted to Know About Video Games” (page 12), Anthony shares the best way to invest in equipment, such as consoles and controllers; how to decide what games to buy; and what you need to know to develop gaming events and activities. In “The Library as the Modern Arcade” (page 15), Justin delves deeper into programming, taking you through the history of gaming at the library and showing how video games connect to library values such as literacy and community. He also provides tips for what games and types of events would work best at the library. And Chi’s article, “Embracing the Power of Gaming in Education” (page 19), is about video games’ positive effects on students and how they can be an integral part of learning. Other articles in this issue include a look at a new Broadway play about the Constitution (page 4), a list of suggestions for how to rein in technology costs (page 11), an examination of the struggles facing cybersecurity in colleges and universities (page 21), and a review of three databases that track economic inequality (page 30).
