ProQuest Unveils New Interface Enhancements
ProQuest Information and Learning announced that it will launch an updated
version of its online information service this month. The new release will
include ProQuest Smart Search, which gives users suggestions for enhanced searching,
and several new e-mail options.
ProQuest Smart Search will analyze users' searches, then offer suggestions
for related topics and publications at the top of the results screen. The same
technology will enable them to browse topics in most ProQuest databases. Users
will also be able to e-mail multiple articles from ProQuest; My Research Summary,
a refined version of the marked list feature; and formatted bibliographies.

Ingenta Launches Beta Version of Its IngentaConnect Flagship Web Service
Ingenta, Inc. announced the first beta version of IngentaConnect, a Web service
that's set to replace ingenta.com and ingentaselect.com, its flagship online
research services.
Scheduled to go live early this fall, IngentaConnect offers technology that
provides increased scalability to support the rapid growth in usage as well
as improved reliability and flexibility. The access and authentication system
has been redeveloped to expand the range of models through which publishers
can provide access to their content.
For the more than 260 publishers whose electronic content is delivered via
the service, IngentaConnect will support a broader range of content types,
such as journals, books, reports, and statistics. There will be more opportunities
to sell content through library deposit accounts and individual subscription
sales.
The first beta Web site focuses on search and browse, with personalization,
administrative, and e-commerce functionality to be phased in during the next
few months.

NewsStand Introduces iBrowse Reader
NewsStand, Inc. announced the introduction of iBrowse, a new browser-based
tool that's used to read digital editions of magazines and newspapers. Publishers
can utilize iBrowse to reach and expand their subscriber base.
"iBrowse is especially appealing for controlled-circulation magazines whose
readership is often based in small businesses or large corporations, including
those using Apple's Macintosh," said Kit Webster, president and CEO of NewsStand. "For
subscribers working in companies with rigorous IT security standards, iBrowse
eliminates firewall and administrative rights issues that would otherwise inhibit
downloading an executable reader to an employee's desktop, laptop, or tablet
PC. It provides a unique and cost-effective way for publishers to reach their
target audiences with rich and dynamic advertising, including multimedia and
digital blow-in cards."

Information Today, Inc. Releases Two New Directories
Information Today, Inc. announced the release of the Directory of Library
Automation Software, Systems, and Services (DOLA) 20042005
edition. The company also announced the availability of ALD On the Web, the American
Library Directory's (ALD) online version.
DOLA
Compiled and edited by Pamela Cibbarelli, DOLA is a reference source
for software packages used in automating libraries. The 20042005 edition
is newly expanded and updated.
DOLA provides detailed descriptions of hundreds of currently available
microcomputer, minicomputer, and mainframe software packages and services.
It includes information on software for library automation, information management,
text retrieval, and citation management. In addition, DOLA offers two
brand-new categories: user ratings of leading library automation software and
filtering software for CIPA compliance.
ALD On the Web
ALD On the Web includes all the information found in the print directory
and is continuously updated to provide access to the latest library information.
It allows users to do the following:
- Locate libraries, consortia, library schools, colleagues, resources,
and qualified prospects
- Search by library type or location to identify libraries and special
collections
- Identify all libraries that meet certain criteria—holdings, staff
size, expenditures, income, and more—with a single search
- Combine search categories to meet library research needs

Swets Opens Publisher Gateway to China Swets Information Services announced that it is the first subscription agent
to provide a broadband portal to electronic content in China. As part of its
e-journals management drive, Swets has entered into a deal with CERNET, a Chinese
academic Internet service provider, to offer users rapid access to SwetsWise
online content.
With the Chinese STM market expected to expand an additional 40 percent during
the next 3 years, this Swets service offers publishers access opportunities
to this market without making large individual investments in Chinese infrastructure,
according to the announcement. The new service also solves slow access problems
and ensures that university users don't pay additional fees when visiting sites
outside of China. In addition, Swets offers publishers sales and marketing
support to actively promote their e-journals.

John Wiley & Sons Launches New Version of Current Protocols Online John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced an upgraded version of its Current
Protocols Online Web site. This update provides desktop access to both recent
and archival content in all of Current Protocols' 12 subject areas.
Scientists use Current Protocols to obtain the latest information and methodologies
for experimentation in their areas of research. The new version of Current
Protocols Online expands both search and browse capabilities. New features
include the following:
- Improved fielded search function
- Adobe PDF file access
- New browser-friendly format
- Bibliography links

Scopus Integrates LinkFinderPlus Endeavor Information Systems and Elsevier announced several months of successful
testing for the integration of LinkFinderPlus, Endeavor's OpenURL-enabled
link resolver, with Scopus, an all-science A&I database.
The LinkFinderPlus and Scopus development teams have partnered since
2002 to build a pioneering user-focused work flow for Scopus. From the results
list of their search, users can check their library's holdings and link to
their entitled full text in only one click. This image-enabled linking ensures
that a user sees a full-text link only when he or she has rights to the full
text.

Project MUSE Releases JSTOR Article Links Project MUSE, an online collection of scholarly journals in the arts, humanities,
and social sciences, announced that as part of a reciprocal-linking program,
it has enabled article-level links to JSTOR from its search interface. These
links are from the back issues of 25 journals common to both collections.
Project MUSE has loaded metadata for the JSTOR articles, which allows users
to search on the citation information (title, author, abstract). JSTOR results
are clearly labeled and take the user to a brief intermediary page alerting
him or her that the article is on another site. JSTOR also allows users to
search and browse the MUSE issues for the same titles.
There are currently more than 40 titles common to both MUSE and JSTOR; this
number is expected to grow to more than 50. Publishers of the journals in the
reciprocal-linking program agree to fill any gaps in coverage between the resources
to ensure that the titles' full digital runs are available. Recently, Ohio
State University Press and Brookings Institution Press agreed to participate
in the linking project. Links from their titles will be available in a future
release.

Cataloger's Desktop Now Available on the Web The Library of Congress' Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) announced
that it has introduced a Web-accessible version of its Cataloger's Desktop
tool. The new subscription product can be accessed 24/7 and provides the most
widely used cataloging-documentation resources in an integrated, online system.
In addition, it includes the current version of the Anglo-American Cataloguing
Rules, second edition (AACR2).
"Cataloger's Desktop on the Web represents the Library of Congress' successful
initiative to offer catalogers everywhere a highly useful and reliable Web
cataloging tool," said Kathryn Mendenhall, chief of CDS. "It incorporates all
of the indispensable cataloging publications [that] catalogers use daily, but
were previously available only in a large number of individual print editions
or as a quarterly CD-ROM ... from CDS."
The rules in AACR2 form the basis for descriptive cataloging practice in
the English-speaking library community, with implications for cataloging standardization
worldwide. The inclusion of AACR2 in Cataloger's Desktop ensures that cataloging
will employ standardized description, which in turn makes the cataloging interchangeable
from one catalog to the next.

Thomson ISI Upgrades Web of Knowledge Thomson ISI announced a major increase in the linking power of ISI Web of
Knowledge, including full-text links to journals from hundreds of new publishers.
The new release of ISI Web of Knowledge incorporates many additions to Thomson
ISI's linking capability, including use of the DOI.
ISI Web of Knowledge now supports direct, customized links to more than 300
publishers for a total of more than 10,000 journals. Users will be able to
link to most of the nearly 200 open-access journals indexed by Web of Science,
a component of ISI Web of Knowledge. In addition, OpenURL linking is being
enhanced with direct links from search summary results and inbound OpenURL
linking to more ISI Web of Knowledge products.

CrossRef, Atypon Announce Forward Linking Service CrossRef and technology partner Atypon announced the launch of CrossRef's
new Forward Linking service. In addition to using CrossRef to create outbound
links from their references, CrossRef member publishers can now retrieve links
to other articles that cite their content. This new service is being offered
as an optional tool to allow CrossRef members to display cited-by links in
the primary content they publish.
Several publishers, including John Wiley & Sons, the American Physical
Society, Blackwell Publishing, Annual Reviews, Kluwer Academic Publishers,
Institute of Physics Publishing, and the American Geophysical Union, have said
that they will participate and complete their implementations of the new service
later this year.
As part of the same functionality powered by Atypon, CrossRef is also offering
a new Forward-Match feature that eliminates the need for users to query CrossRef
repeatedly for citations that do not initially return a match. When a query
is marked to enable alerts, the CrossRef system automatically sends an e-mail
containing the matched results once the relevant content gets registered.

FIZ Karlsruhe Offers Pharmaceutical
Substances Database on STN International FIZ Karlsruhe announced that it is offering Thieme's Pharmaceutical Substances,
an online database for pharmaceutical ingredients, via STN International. More
than 2,300 ingredients are now searchable online. In addition, efficient search
functions and biannual updates allow for quick access to topical information.
According to the announcement, Pharmaceutical Substances is designed to be
a complete reference guide to every significant pharmaceutical compound. It
provides approximately 8,200 reaction schemes that are of interest to the chemical
and pharmaceutical industries. Pharmaceutical Substances covers all substances
contained in drugs that are currently on the market and provides important
basic information for chemists who work in the pharmaceutical industry.

Dialog Upgrades DialogLink Dialog Corp. announced that it is now offering DialogLink 4.0, an upgraded
version of its software package for information professionals.
DialogLink 4.0 adds XML output, new post-processing tools, and e-linking
capabilities that allow users to create reports, distribute information across
an enterprise, and access electronically published scholarly articles. The
new features enable users to better integrate information retrieved from the
Dialog service into real-life work situations, such as in management reports
and corporate intranets and portals.
According to the announcement, DialogLink 4.0 preserves the commands used
in previous versions but enhances them with greater functionality to streamline
the searching process. Other new features include the following:
- Usage-reporting and -tracking tools
- Enhanced options for managing Dialog Alerts and Saved Searches
- Improvements for setting up and maintaining user preferences
- New certified secure connections using Secure Socket Layer technology
to protect privacy for online research

Extenza e-Publishing Services Implements Google Indexing of Hosted E-Journal

Extenza e-Publishing Services announced the Google indexing of e-journal
content held on its journal-hosting platform. This functionality will enable
Google to index all content held in either Adobe PDF or full-text HTML and
provide enhanced search results for end users.
"Increasingly, users are turning to Google as the place to locate information
in the academic marketplace," said Ruth Jones, general manager of Extenza e-Publishing
Services. "Extenza has recognized that enabling the indexing of content by
Google, with the publishers' agreement, helps users find that important piece
of data.... For publishers, this drives utilization and traffic to their content,
with potential benefits in revenue."

EDGAR Online Converts Public-Company Financial Statements into XBRL EDGAR Online, Inc. announced that it now offers U.S. public-company financial
statements in eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). EDGAR Online is
also offering users a limited number of real-time public-company financial
statements directly downloaded into Microsoft Excel 2003 worksheets.
EDGAR Online has been involved in the development of XBRL through its early
work with XBRL International. XBRL is an open specification that uses XML-based
data tags to describe financial statements for both public and private companies.
According to the announcement, these tags are intended to create a royalty-free,
standards-based method that has improved the ways that financial information
can be exchanged.

Abstracts Now Available on EBSCOhost EBSCO Publishing announced the addition of International Political Science
Abstracts (IPSA) to EBSCOhost.
IPSA, produced by the International Political Science Association, includes
current indexing and abstracts of the world's leading political science journals.
The database also contains more than 100,000 records from nearly 900 journals
published from 1989 to the present. Approximately 8,000 new records are added
to the database yearly. EBSCOhost's linking capabilities allow subscribing
libraries to establish links from citations in IPSA to corresponding full text
found in their other EBSCOhost databases as well as e-journal collections.
The International Political Science Association has agreed to accept, at
any time, cancellations to the IPSA print edition and to refund unexpired portions
of subscriptions for those customers seeking access via EBSCOhost.

Elsevier Adds Cell Press, Clinical Oncology Elsevier announced the addition of the Cell Press journal collection to its
ScienceDirect platform. The company also announced that the third edition of Clinical
Oncology is now available online.

With the addition of Cell Press to ScienceDirect, researchers will be able
to access and cross-reference titles in the fields of cellular and molecular
biology, neuroscience, and immunology, including backfiles dating to the journals'
inception. The backfiles contain more than 12,000 articles highlighting important
historic developments in this field dating to 1974.
Clinical Oncology Online
Accessible throughout the life of the third edition, Clinical Oncology Online
allows users to search the full contents of the book with continuous updates,
direct links to online references, and downloadable images from the text for
presentations.

Ovid Announces New Portal Service Ovid Technologies announced the availability of its Portal Advantage Service,
a tool to help societies and publishing partners, independent journal publishers,
foundations, and corporations build fully customizable portals. The service
also enables customers to make their published content available online as
well as offer medical content and resources to support their users' research
and collaboration needs.
The Portal Advantage Service includes full design, hosting, and content selection
from Ovid's repository of bibliographic databases, journals, and book content
as well as third-party data resources (e.g., news feeds, CME, society content).
In addition to specialized content, it provides collaboration, customization,
and community features that allow publishers to enhance their customer and
member relationships.
