EDITOR'S NOTE
‘Hope Is a Practice’
by Brandi Scardilli
In my January/February 2017 Editor’s Note, I wrote, “[L]ibrary workers … are advocates of free speech and defenders of equal rights for all. So we know you’re probably already working on ways you can keep your patrons informed about (and make them feel safe from) any future discriminatory actions by the new presidential administration.” Well, here we go again.
Being a library worker is really difficult right now. My hope is that you’ll find a refuge in these pages, whether you’re looking to commiserate with others, to learn something new, or to read something that makes you smile. I know that 2025 will be tough in a lot of ways, but there will be opportunities to find joy—there always are. As activist Mariame Kaba said, “Hope is a practice.”
This issue, Terry Ballard discusses a new tool for keeping up with federal regulations (p. 8). Anthony Aycock offers a deep dive into resources about Y2K (p. 13). (Can you believe it’s been 25 years since the turn of the millennium?!) Sophia Guevara reviews the book Writing AI Prompts for Dummies (p. 16). Mick O’Leary awards his annual BUDDIE for the Best Unknown Database (p. 22). Tom Gaylord previews the new Supreme Court term (p. 24). And David Haden shares sources of free images related to space exploration (p. 26).
Happy New Year!
