Internet Librarian 2002
Favorite Moments in the Exhibit
Hall
by Marydee Ojala
Some of my favorite moments in the Internet Librarian exhibit hall occurred when
walking by the Dialog booth as they signed up a brand-new customer. Somehow I
think everyone at Internet Librarian is already a Dialog subscriber, but I'm
wrong. I confess to still doing a small double take at the NewsEdge logo on display
in the Dialog booth. I've finally gotten accustomed to the Thomson logo, however.
I stopped by the NTIS booth and learned about some specialized products it
has on its Web site (http://www.ntis.gov).
One was the Homeland Security Information Center that groups together reports
on combating terrorism, food-borne illness, anthrax, weapons of mass destruction,
homeland defense, and safety training, among others. The NTIS representatives
at the booth reported some huge surges of interested visitors, probably as
a result of Donna Scheeder's Cybertour of Homeland Security Sites and the "Disaster
Preparation & Response in a Changing World" session. It's wonderful to
see session topics that create interest in products on display in the exhibit
hall.
Standard & Poor's was showing off its very well-designed NetAdvantage
resource. Redesigned about a year ago based on input from S&P's User Advisory
Board, it shows an attention to detail that librarians expect from a financial
resource. Coming soon to NetAdvantage will be S&P's Analysts' Handbook.
This contains per-share data on companies listed in the S&P 500 Index,
broken down by Sectors and Sub-Industries. Data is indexed on a per-share basisusing
S&P's proprietary system, which allows, among other things, for the retrieval
of statistically significant historical trend data.
