The Center for Information and Communication Sciences at Ball State
University and Ivy Tech State College (Indiana) have announced the launch
of their collaborative effort, LocalWeb4U.com. By localizing the Internet,
the LocalWeb4U.com portal enables businesses, nonprofits, and individuals
to interact in a specific geographic location on the Internet.
Those using the LocalWeb4U.com portal will find Web sites in a community
relevant to them. According to the announcement, the free, simple search
process is focused on the individual needs of end-users, allowing them
to search for information, goods, and services in their hometown or any
geographic area without wading through the irrelevant links that traditional
search engines display. LocalWeb4U nationally places coordinators in communities
of all sizes to facilitate the selling of local advertising and to drive
site usage.
"LocalWeb4U is the portal to people's hearts in communities across the
country," said Joe Clark, CEO of LocalWeb4U.com. "We have put a face with
the Internet, and, as a result, we have become the best option for local
businesses and nonprofit organizations to reach local people."
LocalWeb4U allows users to interact with fellow community members by
submitting local news, sports scores, and events to the site. These submissions
fill the portal's Your Community section, which keeps members informed
and connected.
LocalWeb4U awards "Upoints" to those members who submit information
or visit advertisers' Web sites and/or physical store locations. Upoints
are redeemable for merchandise, chances to win prizes, or contributions
to a charity. Nonprofits that earn Upoints can redeem them for items such
as connectivity, office equipment, or cash donations.
