Using Media for Your Library’s Message

In this issue, we tackle the subject of streaming media in libraries, specifically how libraries are using streaming media platforms to achieve their communications and educational goals, as well as to extend the reach of their special collections. Many of the authors note that the case studies they present here were conceived or accelerated by their library’s pandemic response and the necessity to quickly go virtual with their programming.
This was the case with Chattanooga Public Library’s public relations specialist Christina Sacco, who discusses the library’s launch of a YouTube channel to extend library services and programming to a self-quarantined community.
Christopher Brown and Karin Suni (special collections librarians at the Free Library of Philadelphia) share how they reached out with streaming programs and other online resources.
Daniel Story (digital scholarship librarian at University of California–Santa Cruz) tells how podcasting is shaping the way that libraries can and should create and share audio programs even after the pandemic.
And co-authors Emily Butler, Dorothy Moore, and Daniel Paquette (Springfield Technical Community College) discuss the ongoing value of creating library instructional videos.
In our EDTECH section, Laura Winnick (library media specialist at the Blue School) tells a fascinating tale of teaching her students to make TikTok videos to counter misinformation.
The approaches taken in these case studies are creative, innovative, and inspirational. I trust you will enjoy hearing about what others have done and what you might also be able to do.
