SwetsNet Adds Content from Publishers, Teams with MDL

Swets Subscription Service, a division of Swets & Zeitlinger B.V., has announced that new agreements have been reached with five publishers to provide access to their electronic journal through SwetsNet, the company’s full-text electronic journal service. In a separate release, Swets announced a joint technology and marketing agreement with MDL Information Systems, Inc.

New Publisher Agreements
The new partnerships represent an additional 46 journals, further extending SwetsNet’s international coverage. The publishers are CSIRO Publishing (Australia), Walter de Gruyter (Germany), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (U.S.), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (Sweden), and Multilingual Matters (U.K.).

According to the announcement, Australian science publisher CSIRO Publishing has a worldwide reputation for quality scholarly publications in agricultural, biological, chemical, and environmental sciences. Paul Reekie, CSIRO Publishing’s general manager, said: “This new arrangement with Swets to deliver 13 of our journals to desktops around the world allows us to better service scientists internationally. We are very pleased to be working in partnership with Swets.”

The German publisher Walter de Gruyter will be offering access to 11 full-text journals through SwetsNet. Director of electronic publishing at Walter de Gruyter, Hal Zabin, said, “We clearly recognize the added value that SwetsNet brings to our customers, allowing a seamless interface to content from a large number of providers while maintaining the highest quality standards that we set for our journals.”

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) publishes 11 electronic journals, nine of which are accelerated electronic editions that outpace the print editions by months. Mary Rose Muccie, journals publisher at SIAM, said: “We’re continually looking for ways to deliver our electronic journals more efficiently and to an increasing number of our readers. Services such as SwetsNet provide a valuable service for subscribers and publishers alike by allowing multiple points of entry into our electronic content.”

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm and its associate Lindsay Ross International, Ltd. are making the journal Physica Scripta and associated Topical Issues available through SwetsNet. “This arrangement,” said a Lindsay Ross International spokesman, “seeks to enhance subscriber value, which is vital and to the long-term benefit of publishers, subscribers, their agents, and readers.”

Multilingual Matters, an international publisher of academic books and journals on bilingualism, sociolinguistics, translation, education, and tourism, has made all 10 of its electronic journals available through SwetsNet. “Multilingual Matters is eager to be at the forefront of the development of electronic journals,” said Mike Grover, managing director.

LitLink/Standard Server Offerings
Under the new agreement, MDL customers can enable LitLink/Standard server to access SwetsNet, currently providing over 1,500 titles from a consolidated source.

“We are pleased to be working with the market leader in discovery informatics,” said Steven Hartman, director of sales and marketing. “The affiliation provides the chemical and pharmaceutical industries with global access to SwetsNet’s growing literature collection.”

“In the highly competitive chemical and pharamaceutical industries, customers want immediate access to scientific information to further their research efforts,” said Phil McHale, MDL vice president of product marketing. “With the addition of SwetsNet to LitLink/Standard Server’s literature sites, researchers can access multiple titles from multiple publishers from their desktops. Our affiliation with Swets Subscription Service provides time-saving flexibility for LitLink customers.”
