SilverPlatter Announces Improvements to Web Site, Plus New Partnerships, Additions |
Web Site Updates
SilverPlatter’s Web site (http://www.silverplatter.com)
now features online technical support with searchable tech tips; dynamically
generated menus that, according to the company, are always updated and
easy to navigate; enhanced database collections with keyword searching,
journal lists, and complementary database lists; and a site map.
The site also hosts a database of the month, highlighting a different type of SilverPlatter database that allows researchers to conduct sample searches. Visitors can equest literature or a product trial directly from the site. Also new is a Reference Desk with new customer support content, Web links, and resources, including a library of recent papers and presentations given by SilverPlatter staff.
The SilverPlatter site also has regional pages with information specific
to SilverPlatter’s regional offices. Other pages include press releases
and the latest information on new products and technology.
CatchWord
CatchWord, which has signed on with SilverPlatter as a SilverLinker
and KnowledgeCite full-text provider, hosts 351 journals from 27 publishers.
Journal subjects range from accounting to xenobiotica.
Current CatchWord publishers include the Institution of Chemical Engineers; Plenum Publishing Corporation; Begel House; Psychology-Press; Royal Society of Medicine Press; Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.; Scandinavian University Press; Taylor and Francis Group; and more.
“The addition of CatchWord titles to the SilverLinker Database will enable users to access a significant full-text collection,” said Carol Meyer, SilverLinker product manager. “Our agreement also paves the way for linking from article references to the bibliographic records, which would contribute to an open research environment.”
“This is a big step forward to the development of the virtual electronic library,” said Chris Beckett, CatchWord’s sales and marketing director. “All articles will be available via SilverLinker in PDF and XML, as well as RealPage—and users will be able to follow seamless lines of research linked by articles, citations, and premium bibliographic resources.”
According to SilverPlatter, this will bring the number of full-text links available in SilverLinker to well over 500,000. The SilverLinker database provides URL links at the article level, and these links are inserted into the bibliographic records for which the article exists in electronic form.
SilverPlatter’s KnowledgeCite was created to develop a new way to navigate
scholarly content on the Internet. KnowledgeCite’s flagship product, the
KnowledgeCite Library, is a multidisciplinary digital library—the first
of its kind, according to the company. Through partnerships with librarians,
publishers, distributors, and technology developers, KnowledgeCite is pioneering
a new model of aggregation.
Sociological Abstracts
SilverPlatter, in cooperation with Cambridge Scientific Abstracts,
has expanded the sociofile database. It is now being replaced with the
full Sociological Abstracts database featuring citations from 1963 onward.
According to the announcement, this new Sociological Abstracts file is
the premium source of worldwide research in theoretical and applied sociology,
social science, and policy science. As a result of additional enhancements,
the database now contains new Author and Journal Title indices, as well
as several new fields, including Journal Title, Contributors, Update Code,
Library of Congress Catalog Number, and International Standard Book Number.
Fully abstracted, Sociological Abstracts provides access to the latest
worldwide scholarly findings in theoretical and applied sociology, social
science, and policy science. Produced by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts,
Sociological Abstracts features journal citations and abstracts; book,
chapter, and association-paper abstracts; and book, film, and software
review and dissertation citations. The database also contains major and
minor descriptors taken from the Thesaurus of Sociological Indexing Terms.
Entries cover sociological aspects of 29 broad topics about society, including
anthropology, business, collective behavior, community development, disaster
studies, and more.
CINAHL Database
SilverPlatter, in cooperation with Cinahl Information Systems, is releasing
the newest edition of the CINAHL Database. CINAHL (Cumulative Index to
Nursing and Allied Health) was started over 40 years ago when California
hospital librarian Mildred Grandbois began indexing articles from nursing
journals. This release incorporates several new features, including image
files, within the database. Customers no longer have to obtain PDFs from
the SilverPlatter ftp server; the PDFs are now on the database in an IMAGES
subdirectory.
Other new features include the addition of three new subheadings in the thesaurus: Blood (BL), Immunology (IM), and Urine (UR). One subheading code has also been changed: Middle Age (IZ) is no longer “IMA.”
Two categories have been added in the journal subsets: Computer/Information Science (IS) and Health Promotion/Education (HP).
The CINAHL Database indexes articles from 419 nursing journals, 275
allied health journals, 59 information science journals, 57 consumer health
journals, 34 alternative therapy journals, and 413 biomedical journals.
It also indexes books; book chapters; pamphlets, with emphasis on those
produced by professional organizations and government departments; pamphlet
chapters; audiovisual material; software; dissertations; and more.
Major Companies Database
According to SilverPlatter, Major Companies Database provides in-depth
information on over 80,000 companies in more than 180 countries outside
of North America. Information indexed includes private, public, and state-owned
organizations. The data is updated constantly using questionnaires, fax,
and telephone interviews by researchers in each country. Each listing contains
complete address information, description of business, financials, executive
information, SIC codes, country of incorporation, job title, industry,
global affiliations, and company size.
Major Companies Database is produced by Graham & Whiteside, a U.K.-based provider of company data. It is available via the Internet, CD-ROM, or hard disk and covers the current year. Updates are published quarterly.
The database can be purchased by region or complete set. The four regions
available are Europe, including Western, Eastern, and the Commonwealth
of Independent States (CIS, the former Soviet Union); the Arab World and
Africa south of the Sahara; Far East, Australia, and Southeast Asia; and
Latin America and the Caribbean.
SPORTDiscus
The SPORTDiscus database, available from SilverPlatter Information,
now features five new fields. SPORTDiscus provides multidisciplinary coverage
of sport, fitness, sport medicine, administration, and recreation publications,
and contains over 13,000 URLs to the sport, fitness, and sports medicine-related
Web sites and electronic journals cataloged on SPORTQuest (http://www.sportquest.com).
The five new fields include the Canadian Library of Congress Number; the frequency of publication information for serial titles; SIRC holdings—serial holdings for the SIRC library and document delivery service; the publisher’s e-mail address; and the author’s e-mail address. Web sites linking directly to the full text of the citation are included where available.
Updated quarterly and available either on CD-ROM or online, SPORTDiscus contains more than 500,000 bibliographic citations to information published in magazines and other periodicals, books, theses, dissertations, conference proceedings, research papers, Web sites, and audiovisual and multimedia material.
Every bibliographic citation added to SPORTDiscus is indexed with specific subject-related keywords taken from the SPORT Thesaurus. The thesaurus is embedded in SPORTDiscus.
