CARL Corporation Releases CARLweb 2.0
CARL Corporation has announced the release of the new version of
its Web OPAC interface, CARLweb. CARLweb presents a gateway to library
catalogs and information databases across the CARL System. CARLweb was
designed to provide powerful access and retrieval to all library users,
regardless of their skill level or the complexity of their information
needs. Many CARLweb 2.0 features provide customization options that
allow libraries to configure database access to meet the needs of their
user communities.
CARLweb version 2.0 (which can be seen at
http://www.carl.org:1080) includes the following features:
- New screen designs for improved ease of use and better
navigational capabilities
- Support for unicode-based multilingual features (Spanish and
Chinese initially), which will be available in the next release
- Personal List Manager, which allows users to mark individual
records for a personal bibliography (Users can save or e-mail brief and
full records in ASCII or HTML formats.)
- Search History feature that groups previous result sets by database
- Access to Z39.50 databases and CARL catalogs, accessible
through the same interface
- Several site customization options, including database
groupings and start-up options (CARLweb can be configured to start at
the search screen for a particular database or a broadcast search screen
for a group of databases), library-defined inactivity time-out period,
the ability to customize at the database level (tags within the full
record appear as clickable links), and holdings information that can be
displayed on the full bib record or on a separate screen
- Patron-placed holds
- Support for truncation and Quick Search commands
- Bolding of search terms in the full bib record
Features currently in the beta-test phase that will be available
in future releases of CARLweb include extending the multilingual
capability to additional languages, as well as more patron self
services, including self-registration, online renewal, and reference
services.
