MULTIMEDIA MEDLEY column reports on several products in the $20,000 to $70,000 price range that search Web sites for video information, index and extract the video assets, and render them searchable. Says these capabilities are becoming increasingly important as more news footage, short documentaries, and educational programs move onto the Internet. Notes that Magnifi, used by ABC News, PBS, and CNN, is the most powerful product currently available, adding that the CNN implementation is the most comprehensive, providing video filters to limit searches by video type, playback duration, frame rate, color, brightness, and contrast. Indicates other noteworthy products include Video Cataloger from Virage, Video Analysis Engine from Excalibur, and Media Key Logger from ISLIP.
