Gale Group Partners with Texas Library Connection, Unveils Online Catalog, Allies with ABC-CLIO

The Gale Group, working with the Texas Education Agency, has announced that it has been selected to provide full-text online resources to the Texas Library Connection, a statewide program that provides equal access to information resources for students and educators in pre-K through 12th grade member schools in Texas. According to the company, the contract is one of the most comprehensive ever struck for online school references. The company has also announced that it has released its online Product Catalog, which is available at http://www.galegroup.com. Gale Group also announced a partnership with ABC-CLIO that will make ABC-CLIO’s history bibliographies available through Gale’s new History Resource Center.

Texas Library Connection
On September 1, 2000, more than 4,000 school libraries, all members of the Texas Library Connection, will be connected to online resources that include full-text periodical and Spanish-language databases; verified reference articles related to virtually every curriculum area; rare primary documents; and data developed exclusively for Texas, such as the Texas Almanac. Additionally, there are resources designed for the professional-development needs of teachers and administrators.

According to the announcement, the diversity of the data selected by the Texas Library Connection positions Texas to use the school library as its educational information hub, serving students’ homework needs as well as the professional-development needs of staff.

Gale’s Product Catalog
Gale Group’s new online catalog is a resource for both customers and employees, and it links to Gale’s business system and intranet, providing real-time updates on print, electronic, CD-ROM, and microfiche products for Gale’s customers around the world.

“Customers told us that what they wanted most from a Web site was product information,” said Gale Group CEO Allen Paschal. “This catalog gives them a complete information package in one spot.”

In addition to accessing comprehensive product descriptions, awards products have won, review excerpts, sample pages, and screen captures, customers can follow direct links from the description to downloadable product fact sheets and title lists (which include a complete listing of periodical sources contained in online databases) stored as PDF files. If it all works out, the customer can place an order online via a Shopping Cart.

Important new electronic products include a link to their own Web sites, designed to provide both guided tours of the products and in-depth information. History Resource Center, a major new online product that follows the pattern set by Biography Resource Center and Literature Resource Center, is the first product to have its own Web site. Customers can link to it from the catalog.

Gale Group employees can link to the catalog from the company’s intranet, allowing all employees (regardless of their office location) to quickly look up product information and selling features, learn about competitive products, and download PowerPoint presentations that are being created for overseas distributors.

“It’s an important communication tool that links all of Gale Group’s offices throughout the world,” said Paschal. “We’ve set a new standard with this catalog. It’s a boon for anyone who needs information about the Gale Group.”

Gale, ABC-CLIO
Gale’s History Resource Center, an online reference tool, was expected to debut late last month, and it integrates high-quality references of all types from a variety of publishers. According to the announcement, History Resource Center will make the research process for any historical topic, or history-maker, quick and straightforward. Through the partnership with ABC-CLIO, subscribers to History Resource Center: U.S., the first module of the center, will have the option to search ABC-CLIO’s America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts databases through the History Resource Center’s interface.

America: History and Life is a comprehensive bibliography of journal articles, book/media reviews, and dissertations on the history and culture of the U.S. and Canada from prehistory to the present. Historical Abstracts covers the world, excluding North America, from 1450 to the present. It provides abstracts and citations to books, dissertations, and articles found in approximately 1,700 journals published worldwide in history, the social sciences, and related humanities.

“We’re really excited about this partnership because the ABC-CLIO products add an important component to History Resource Center,” said John Barnes, senior vice president and general manager of Gale’s public and academic library markets group. “Our goal for this product is for it to be the most comprehensive, highest-quality history library on the Web. The ABC-CLIO databases are an absolutely perfect fit.”

Ron Boehm, chairman and president of ABC-CLIO, said: “We have always made our publications available to the widest audience possible. Including our premier history databases in the History Resource Center will make a more complete product for historical research. The Resource Center is another opportunity for users to access our broad and comprehensive coverage in the format that they want. We are happy to partner with the Gale Group on this important new history resource.”

Subscribers to History Resource Center: U.S. can opt to include America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts at an annual subscription rate that’s determined on a site-by-site basis. Subscribers who are current users of the ABC-CLIO databases will pay a one-time fee to activate the link between the products.
