Online Before the Internet,
Parts 3 & 4:
Early Pioneers Tell Their Stories
by Susanne Bjørner • Bjørner & Associates
& Stephanie C. Ardito • Ardito Information & Research,
Inc.
"Online Before the Internet" continues a series of interviews
with selected industry pioneers who were responsible for
the first online wave. The October 2003 issue of Searcher
printed excerpts from interviews with Dr. Carlos A. Cuadra,
originator and champion of ORBIT Search Service (1972-1978),
owned by System Development Corporation (SDC), and Dr.
Roger K. Summit, who, at the aircraft manufacturer, Lockheed,
in 1966 was responsible for designing and developing the
interactive information retrieval system used as the basis
for Dialog Information Services (established in 1972).
Dr. Cuadra and Dr. Summit spoke in separate interviews in California in April
2000.
The complete interviews are presented here.
