According to the company, the fifth edition of Graham & Whiteside’s Major Companies of Latin America and the Caribbean highlights the spread of e-commerce and the use of the Web as a marketing tool by businesses throughout this region.
The directory details an increase of 44 percent in the number of companies that now have Web sites. While this growth is most pronounced in the bigger economies of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, and Mexico, a growing number of companies in the other 40 countries for which data is given have also begun to embrace the power of this new technology.
Pauline Murphy, sales and marketing director for Graham & Whiteside, says it is now hard to ignore the global importance of the Internet. “The leading businesses all over the world are using the Web in ever more creative ways. It is not … surprising that more of the biggest players in Latin America and the Caribbean are now capitalizing on the many benefits of the Internet.”
With all data completely updated since the previous edition, information provided for each company listed includes (as available) company name, address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and Web addresses, names of 42,000 senior management and board members, description of business activities, brand names and trademarks, subsidiaries and associates, number of employees, financial information for the last 2 years, principal shareholders, and public/private status.

The fifth edition of this annual directory details complete and accurate information on 6,200 businesses in 43 African countries. Over the last 12 months, additional research time has been dedicated to gathering in-depth financial figures for these companies, giving the reader more valuable data on Africa’s biggest players. With this new edition, Graham & Whiteside has sought to provide an even more complete picture of the African business world.
Murphy said: “The research process for a directory such as Major Companies of Africa South of the Sahara is painstaking. There remains much unrest in many parts of Africa, and even the slightest political or economic change can make the task of gathering data difficult. For this reason, we use only dedicated researchers who make it their business to find out exactly what is going on in the region—from telephone code changes in Swaziland to war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
Information provided for each company listed includes company name, management and board members, description of business activities, brand names and trademarks, subsidiaries and associates, number of employees, financial information for the last 2 years, principal shareholders, and date of establishment.

In compiling this book, Graham & Whiteside’s researchers have been made aware of the wide-reaching effects of the natural disasters to befall India and Turkey during 1999. “The tragedies in Turkey and Orissa have impacted throughout this region,” said Murphy. “We trust that the coming year will bring new hope to all companies and individuals living and working in the region.”
